BRIEF HISTORY OF THE LIBRARY
The university library has its humble beginning, the Catarman farm school library which was opened in June 1918, the school was converted into the Catarman National Agricultural High School, which was financed by the National Government. The collections increased but were mostly for High school Student taking the Agricultural high school curriculum.
Having realized the nation's need for college - trained technical men, Congress approved Republic Act 1434 on June 14, 1956, which converted the agricultural high school into a state college known as the Samar Institute of Technology. The said Republic Act was implemented on September 7,1957 with the offering of collegiate courses in Agriculture and Home Technology.
On June 20,1964, Congress approved Republic Act, 4216 which elevated the institution into a State University, now known
as the University of Eastern Philippines. Its major objective is to give technical and professional training, advance instruction in literature, philosophy science and arts besides providing for the promotion of scientific and technical researches.
With the opening of some new courses, the University library’s collections tremendously increased with purchased of books from the university funds and donations coming from private persons, foundation and other agencies.
Presently the UEP library contains a rich collections of books and periodicals, listing, more than 19,496 volumes of book, which is classifieds according to the Dewey Decimal Classifications System. The library receive about a number of titles of local and foreign publications.
The University Library takes pride as it contributes to the fulfillment of the University's mission in its continued commitment to serve its clients in the next millennium.
The University of the Philippines library aims to develop in our students the cultivation and development of social attitudes, healthful, correct and consistent study habit and better reading taste. It aims to give services to the whole populace.
The University library shall increased liberally educated, competent, professional men and women updated with global issues developed through the love for reading and the application of their required ideas in the service of their family and community.
To increase the number of updated reference collection in response to the needs of the library users.
To support and promote the use of information sources by providing reference and information services that meet the needs of the library users.
OBJECTIVE OF THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY:
For the undergraduate students, the library program provides materials and services especially designed to meet their requirements.
For the students pursuing advanced study, the faculty members involved in that study, resident or visiting research specialist, it provides resources and services to support each of the graduate programs and materials of sufficient quantity and diversity to support research in every subject field.
It provides resources for the university’s program of continuing education, participates in the publishing program of the university; as the depository of the university’s publication and services both as repository and a generating source of knowledge and ideas.
